Troubleshooting error messages when deleting an attachment

This article explains how to resolve common errors encountered when trying to delete an attachment.
"File is currently locked" error
You may see the error message "Could not perform the requested action because a file is currently locked or open for editing".
This happens if a user is currently editing the file that you are trying to delete. Once the file is closed, you will be able to delete it.
"File is in use" error
You may see the error message "Could not perform the requested action on example file because it is in use".
This occurs if you try to delete a file that is attached to a record. You must first remove it from all parent records before deleting it.
To remove it from parent records:
- Go to the Attachments module.
- Click the ellipsis next to the file name.
- Select Referenced by.
This will take you to a page showing parent records for the attachment.
- Visit each parent record.
- Remove the attachment from each record.
- Try deleting the attachment again.
